Applications

The aim of the second, larger part of the project was to phrase questions by means of various qualitative research work and to develop first hypotheses on how an added value for both can arise through the interaction of humanoid robots and humans in different everyday situations.

Central element of the studies to be conducted was the robot model "Pepper". The focus and strengths of this robotic model are its interaction with humans. For this reason, the studies have been specifically adjusted to the skills in the field of embodied dialogue. Therefore, uses in which Pepper or Yuki interacted with (manageable) groups of humans were investigated.

Following the principle of development - evaluation -advancement, a large number of special software applications for the robots were developed for this purpose, which enabled them to demonstrate (communicative) behavior that uses humans and makes the robots themselves credible in their role.

Possibilities of application of Pepper / Yuki that were developed and used:

  • Lecture accompaniment
  • Introduction in the course
  • Glossary
  • Quizmaster app
  • Presenter App
  • Prospects: Advisor app

One of the developed software applications is the so-called Quizmaster App. In the winter semester 2017/2018, the Quizmaster App was used, tested and evaluated before it was further developed based on the experience of the project team and the results of the evaluation. Furthermore, in the summer semester of 2018, the Presenter App and the Orientation Assistant App were developed. In the winter semester 2018/2019, the Student Advisor App will be tested and evaluated for the first time with first-year students.

The newest development is the Voting Controller App, with which an Audience-Response-System is used via the robot so the students/ the audience can answer questions with the help of mobile devices.
